What is Laylatul Qadr?

Laylatul Qadr is the night when the Holy Qur’an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibreel (AS). Allah mentions this night in the Qur’an in Surah Al-Qadr:

“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”
— (Qur’an 97:1–3)

This means worship performed on this single night is better than worship of 83 years and 4 months. Imagine the reward of one sincere dua, one tear of repentance, or one act of charity on this blessed night.

 Importance of Laylatul Qadr

1️⃣ Better Than a Thousand Months

The phrase “better than a thousand months” shows its unmatched spiritual value. Allah, in His mercy, gave this night to the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ so we can earn rewards equal to a lifetime of worship in just one night.

2️⃣ Night of Forgiveness

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Whoever stands (in prayer) on Laylatul Qadr with faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”
— (Sahih Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

This hadith gives hope to every sinner. No matter how heavy your past is, this night is an open door to complete forgiveness.

3️⃣ Angels Descend in Great Numbers

Allah says in Surah Al-Qadr:

Scholars explain that Angel Jibreel (AS) descends along with countless angels carrying mercy and blessings. The earth becomes filled with peace and divine presence.

4️⃣ Decrees for the Coming Year Are Written

Laylatul Qadr is also called the Night of Decree because Allah decides matters for the coming year — life, death, sustenance, health, and major events. This shows how important our duas are on this night.

When is Laylatul Qadr?

The exact date is hidden, but the Prophet ﷺ advised seeking it in the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially on the odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th).

Many scholars believe the 27th night is most likely, but it is not confirmed. The wisdom behind hiding it is to encourage believers to worship throughout the last ten nights rather than focusing on just one night.

 Signs of Laylatul Qadr

There are authentic signs mentioned in Hadith that indicate Laylatul Qadr:

 1. The Night is Peaceful and Calm

The Prophet ﷺ described it as a night that is neither too hot nor too cold. It feels peaceful and tranquil. A believer may feel unusual calmness and spiritual connection.

 2. The Sun Rises Without Strong Rays

One of the most authentic signs is that the sun rises the next morning without strong rays, appearing soft and gentle.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The sun rises on that day without rays, like a brass dish, until it rises high.”
— (Sahih Muslim)

 3. Moderate Weather

The night is balanced — not stormy, not extremely windy, and not intensely hot or cold.

 4. Spiritual Sweetness

Many believers report feeling deep peace, softness in the heart, and a strong desire for worship.

However, remember: Signs should not be our focus. Worship should be our focus.

 Best Dua for Laylatul Qadr

Aisha (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ:

“O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylatul Qadr, what should I say in it?”

He replied:

“Say: Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.”

Meaning:

“O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.”
— (Tirmidhi)

This is the most recommended dua for this night.

How to Prepare for Laylatul Qadr

1️⃣ Increase Night Prayers (Qiyam-ul-Layl)

Pray Tahajjud with sincerity. Even 2 rak’ahs with full focus are powerful.

2️⃣ Recite and Reflect on the Qur’an

Since this is the night of Qur’an revelation, connect deeply with the Book of Allah.

3️⃣ Make Personal Duas

Ask for:

  • Forgiveness

  • Rizq (sustenance)

  • Health

  • Marriage

  • Protection

  • Success in dunya and akhirah

Write your duas in advance so you don’t forget.

4️⃣ Give Charity

Even a small sadaqah on this night equals charity given for 83 years.

5️⃣ Seek Forgiveness Sincerely

Cry before Allah. Admit your weaknesses. Make sincere tawbah.

Practical Guidance for Working Women & Mothers

If you cannot stay awake all night:

  • Pray Isha and Fajr in congregation (huge reward)

  • Pray at least 2 rak’ahs before sleeping

  • Wake up for 20–30 minutes for dua

  • Listen to Qur’an while managing home tasks

  • Make dhikr while cooking or cleaning

Remember, Allah looks at sincerity, not length of worship.

 Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Waiting only for the 27th night

  • Spending the night mostly on phone or social media

  • Focusing only on signs instead of worship

  • Praying without understanding what you’re asking

Laylatul Qadr is about connection, not just rituals.

 Spiritual Impact of Laylatul Qadr

Laylatul Qadr teaches us:

  • The value of time

  • The power of sincere repentance

  • Allah’s unlimited mercy

  • The importance of consistent worship

It reminds us that one night can change our destiny.

Conclusion – Don’t Miss This Divine Opportunity

Laylatul Qadr is not just a night; it is a divine gift. A night where the doors of heaven are open, angels fill the earth, and Allah’s mercy descends in abundance. It is a night where broken hearts are healed, sins are erased, and destinies are rewritten.

Every year, we say: “Next Ramadan, I will do better.” But we do not know if we will live to see another Ramadan.

So this year, do not let Laylatul Qadr pass like any other night.

Turn off distractions. Raise your hands. Cry if you can. Speak to Allah as your Creator, your Provider, your Forgiver.

Even if you feel distant from Allah, this night is your chance to return.

Remember:

One sincere dua on Laylatul Qadr can change your entire life.

May Allah grant us the ability to recognize Laylatul Qadr, worship Him sincerely, and be among those whose sins are forgiven and whose names are written among the successful in this world and the hereafter. Ameen.
