Astaghfar: The Power of Seeking Forgiveness in Islam

     Astaghfar Zikar

     Astaghfirullāh  (أستغفر الله)

“I seek forgiveness from Allah.”

Introduction

In our daily lives, every human being makes mistakes, feels regret, and experiences moments of weakness. Islam, in its mercy and wisdom, acknowledges human imperfection and provides a simple yet powerful remedy for the heart and soul: Astaghfar, the act of seeking forgiveness from Allah.

No matter how great or small a sin may be, Allah’s door of forgiveness is always open for those who turn back to Him sincerely. Astaghfar is not only about erasing sins—it is a source of peace, strength, and relief in a world full of stress, anxiety, and constant challenges.

What Is Astaghfar?

Astaghfar means asking Allah for forgiveness by saying “Astaghfirullāh” (I seek forgiveness from Allah). It is an act of worship that cleanses the soul, softens the heart, and renews a believer’s connection with Allah.

When practiced regularly and sincerely, Astaghfar becomes a means of spiritual healing and emotional balance. It reminds us that true comfort does not come from material things, but from remembering Allah and returning to Him.

Benefits of Astaghfar

Seeking forgiveness brings many spiritual and worldly benefits, including:

  • Peace of heart – It calms the mind and eases emotional burden

  • Forgiveness of sins – Allah wipes away past mistakes

  • Relief from stress and anxiety – The heart feels lighter and more hopeful

  • Increase in blessings (Rizq) – Sustenance and ease come from unexpected sources

Astaghfar helps believers face life with patience, humility, and trust in Allah’s mercy.

How to Do Astaghfar Properly

Astaghfar is simple, but sincerity is essential. True forgiveness involves both the tongue and the heart.

Steps of Astaghfar:

  1. Say Astaghfirullāh with your tongue

  2. Feel genuine regret in your heart

  3. Make a sincere intention not to repeat the sin

You can make Astaghfar:

  • After Salah

  • At any time during the day

  • When feeling sad, stressed, or guilty

There is no special condition or place required—Allah listens at all times.

How Many Times Should You Say Astaghfar?

There is no fixed limit for Astaghfar.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek forgiveness 70 to 100 times daily, even though he was free from sin. This shows the importance of constant repentance.

You may say Astaghfar:

  • 100 times

  • 500 times

  • 1,000 times

  • 7,000 times or more

What matters most is consistency and sincerity, not the number.

Astaghfar According to the Qur’an

The Qur’an clearly highlights the power of seeking forgiveness.

Surah Nuh (71:10–12)

Allah says:

“I said, ‘Seek forgiveness from your Lord. Indeed, He is Ever-Forgiving.
He will send rain from the sky in abundance,
and give you increase in wealth and children,
and provide for you gardens and rivers.’”

Explanation:

These verses show that Astaghfar is not only for forgiveness of sins, but also a means of receiving Allah’s blessings. Sincere repentance can bring ease in financial matters, family life, and overall stability. Turning back to Allah opens doors that seem closed.

Surah Al-Anfal (8:33)

Allah says:

“And Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.”

Explanation:

This verse highlights the protective power of Astaghfar. Seeking forgiveness invites Allah’s mercy and shields a believer from punishment and hardship.

Hadith About Astaghfar

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Whoever constantly seeks forgiveness, Allah will make a way out for him from every distress, relieve him from every anxiety, and provide for him from where he does not expect.”
(Abu Dawood)

Lesson:

This Hadith teaches that Astaghfar brings relief from stress, worry, and unexpected difficulties. It strengthens trust in Allah during hard times.

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

“By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.”
(Bukhari)

Lesson:

Despite being sinless, the Prophet ﷺ consistently sought forgiveness. This teaches humility and shows that Astaghfar is essential for every believer, regardless of their level of faith.

Conclusion

Astaghfar is a powerful yet simple act of worship that brings forgiveness, peace of heart, and relief from life’s difficulties. When practiced sincerely and consistently, it strengthens faith, softens the heart, and invites Allah’s mercy and blessings into daily life.

In moments of weakness, stress, or regret, returning to Allah through Astaghfar reminds us that hope is never lost and forgiveness is always within reach.
